Do I need to stop drinking coffee? Can caffeine affect my baby?

A fresh cup of coffee in the morning is to some people an adrenalin shot into the vein. For some one is not enough. During your pregnancy you will need to pay special attention to the amounts of caffeine you consume for a few reasons: Caffeine causes increased urine output (Diuretic), which washes away many important nutrients and minerals such as calcium. As it causes frequent urination, it will be a hassle to go to the bathroom every ten minutes when you are seven months pregnant. Caffeine's energizing qualities can create havoc as you are filled with pregnancy hormones which already turn your body into a rollercoaster of physical and mental changes.

Another fact that is not connected to caffeine and yet is relatively unknown is that tea and coffee contain compounds called phenols that effect iron absorption in the body. Iron is most important in pregnancy for both the baby's and mother's strength.

The effect of caffeine on the baby has not been completely discovered.  It is believed that  caffeine does not reach the placenta, however copious amounts of caffeine usage may cause a miscarriage, especially in first-time moms.  The advised amount agreed on by most doctors is two cups a day.
