One of the most important nutrients is calcium. It builds bones and strengthens your immune system. It is crucial for the bone structure of your baby, especially in the third trimester.

Woman Drinking MilkThe phrase "eating for two" was invented for a good reason. To help your baby grow normally and come out healthy, you will need to take notice of what you eat and the quantities you consume. Some expectant mothers will need to switch their entire diet and lifestyle. Eating too little is not an option. When you eat only lettuce and rice cakes, your baby will not get his minerals, vitamins and nutrients and can be born prematurely, small or ill. You will need to bulk up on calcium, and plenty of it.

You will need to take in twice the amount of calcium as you used to (1600 mg instead of 800). The baby’s bones and teeth start growing in the second month; the growth increases rapidly from the sixth month onward. If you do not get sufficient calcium, the baby will “suck” the calcium from you, and might create a deficiency called osteoporosis.

The best product for calcium is yogurt. It absorbs well, is low in calories and is rich in calcium. If you are lactose intolerant, drink soy or rice milk. It does the same work and will not make you congested. For more calcium rich products see the list of related readings.

Anther important way to absorb calcium is to use Vitamin D. Yogurt, whole milk and soy milk; fish and oils are rich in vitamin D.

So, how does a dinner of fish with a rich yogurt sauce sound?
