First you should remember that even though you are eating for two, the other person is the size of an acorn at first and a basketball in the end. According to nutritionists, normal weight mothers need only an extra 500-700 calories a day. Eating two candy bars is just about twice that amount.

Dieting during pregnancy is not recommended by any physician. Depriving your body from any food group (carbs, protein, sugars) can create development trouble with your baby. If your baby does not get enough of his nutrients, he can develop slowly, suffer from deficiencies and be born prematurely. Some diets can leave you with lack in iron, proteins, folic acid and other minerals and nutrients essential for you baby's growth.

Women who eat well and gain an appropriate amount of weight are more likely to have healthy babies. So if you're eating fresh, wholesome foods and gaining weight, relax: you're supposed to be getting bigger



If you are overweight, you can improve your diet, cut out junk food and get some exercise (see your doctor first). Research has shown that in these circumstances it is safe to not gain any weight or even to lose weight during your pregnancy, as your body's fat reserves will provide your baby with enough calories.  Weight gain is an essential part of pregnancy and indicates that the pregnancy is going well. Remember to exercise, eat regularly, get your rest and you will feel good and you will have a much easier time getting those extra pounds off when your baby is born
