Here are some lesser known facts about everyday products. Read this to know what to avoid next time you go to a restaurant or the farmers market.

Farmers MarketCheese and dairy products

A lot has changed from the days of the popularity of "Got Milk?". Today it is widely known that dairy products should be consumed moderately. Never, under any circumstance eat unpasteurized cheeses (which are common in boutique farms). These products can contain Listeria, which could cause premature birth, birth defects or in rare cases, death of the baby. Other products that may contain Listeria are uncooked hotdogs, un-pasteurized cider shellfish and imported soft cheese (feta, brie, camembert, gorgonzola and other blue cheeses).

Diet soda

Rumors about harmful diet sodas and specifically about sweeteners in sodas have circled. According to researchers, there is not any evidence to back these rumors.
In this case, use your judgment. The only advice is to drink them moderately. If you drink a can a day, no harm will come to you.

Coffee

During pregnancy you will need to tame your coffee habits. Studies have showed that caffeine can cause urine problems, iron deficiency and in severe cases premature labor. Drink two cups as day and use replacements: a bowl of cereal, rice treats or a banana might do the trick. Herbal tea

Many herbal teas are safe during pregnancy, but you should be cautious. Large amounts of some herbs such as peppermint and red raspberry leaf are thought to cause contractions and increase preterm labor. Be sure to steer clear of teas that have unfamiliar ingredients; instead, look for those teas that are made from ingredients that are a part of your normal diet (like orange extract). Remember that "natural" doesn't always mean "safe." If you are unsure, talk to your doctor.

Fish

Sushi is a big no-no. Raw fish can contain salmonella, can cause Listeria and other illnesses. Even if you are not affected, your baby might be.
Other fish can contain high levels of mercury which are dangerous. Avoid fish such as shark, king fish, mackerel.

Foods to avoid:

• Pates of any kind
• liver, for its retinol (Vitamin A supplement) quantities.
• Peanuts. Even if you're not allergic, your baby may be.
• Alcohol. This is a matter of judgment. No studies have shown complications from drinking a glass of wine, but don't drink heavily. Remember, what you drink, your baby does.

Remember, foods that you ate when you were not pregnant can be troublesome for your baby. Be wise in your choices of places to eat, what products to buy and where to buy them.  Your health is your baby's health.
