How to Choose a Credit Counseling Agency

Why ask questions?

Looking for a good credit counselor is similar to looking for the right doctor, midwife or hospital for your pregnancy.  In one case you are looking for someone to deliver your baby, in the other for someone to deliver financial planning.  There are questions that you should ask and the corresponding answers you wish to get.  Here are some tips on how to choose your credit counselor.

When you are seeking help with your problems, you want to know you have reached the best person or organization.  But it isn't always so easy to know which the best person is, when it comes to an area you know almost nothing about. There are some questions you should ask which may help you know if you are dealing with someone trustworthy, who is equipped to assist you.

A guide to credit counseling

If you want to work with a credit counseling agency, interview several.
First of all, check with your state Attorney General, local consumer protection agency and the Better Business Bureau to find out if anyone has filed complaints about the agency you're considering. One of the easiest ways to eliminate counseling agencies, is asking them to send you information about themselves (you don't need to provide any details about your own situation).  If they refuse such a request, you should usually move on to a different company.
