Page 5 of 7 There are different questions you should ask in order to get the idea of credit counseling from different perspectives: Your personal situation How much do I have to owe to use your services? In addition to helping me solve my immediate problem, will you help me develop a plan for avoiding problems in the future? Will I have a formal written agreement or contract with you? Will I be working with one counselor or several? What assurance do I have that information about me (including my address and phone number) will be kept confidential? Fees What are your fees and are they monthly? Do I have to pay anything before you can help me? What’s the basis for the fees? How do you determine the amount of my payment? What if this is more than I can afford? Certification of the agency What is the source of your funding? Who regulates, oversees and/or licenses your agency? Is your agency audited? What are the qualifications of your counselors? If they aren't accredited or certified, how are they trained? It may seem like a whole lot of questions, but the more information you get – The better standing point you have. Knowing the terms of the counseling, and understanding what exactly is the organization you are dealing with, will help you find the best way to arrange your financial matters. |
