Your first blood tests check that "all engines are go" for you to carry your baby in health and safety.

The blood test is taken in your first prenatal exam. Prenatal exams should be scheduled at your first appointment at your GP. These tests are crucial to monitor your and your baby's condition. These tests can show complications in the womb and can test for disorders such as down syndrome. These tests can save lives! Go to every appointment.

So, what does the first blood test look for?

The first thing is a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Normal levels of this hormone show normal development of the fetus. This hormone is produced by the fetus and is actually responsible for your tip turning blue when you take your pregnancy test.

The second is screening for sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, HIV and more. It also searches for signs of rubella. It also will determine your blood type and its compatibility with your baby (Rh Factor), this is important in the slight chance of transfusion during birth. Type O blood is the most common, then A and B. AB type blood are rare. This test searches the surface of your red blood cells. If you are Rhesus positive, it means you have protein on the surface and if it is negative, you don't.

The blood test also measures your iron levels to avoid the risk anemia. If you do suffer from low iron levels, consult your GP on a diet and read the article in our pregnancy book,  Iron Deficiency during pregnancy (Anemia) .

The last thing it looks for is hepatitis B. you may have it and know about it that is why it is important for your doctor to find out. Things that are not harmful to you, can hurt your baby.

Taking these tests, can put you in ease. It is important that you be on top of your pregnancy for a calm mind and a healthy body.
