Chloasma is spots of darkened skin that may appear on your face during pregnancy, sometimes creating a mask-like complexion.

Chloasma is caused by pregnancy hormones that can produce hyper-pigmentation in many areas of your body. Your freckles and moles might be darker and you might have a dark line down the center of your abdomen called “Linea Nigra”. Dark-skinned women are affected usually more by the hyper-pigmentation, even though it is shared by all races. Never the less, don’t be too discouraged. These spots should fade away within a few months after your birth. On the other hand, here a few tips to help you control these spots from spreading:   Eat foods high in Folic acid such as lettuce and other leafy greens, oranges and whole-wheat products.

Stay out of the sun as much as possible, and when going out cover yourself well. You may use cosmetic products such as concealer but avoid peeling, lasers or other chemical procedures. And remember, pregnancy is a passing phase and it is worth a few temporary blemishes.
