Many of women suffer from a heightened sense of smell, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy.

This can make a small clove of garlic smell like a field, which can cause you to feel nauseous and short of breath. This is caused by high amounts of estrogen.  Many doctors believe it is a defense mechanism that helps a pregnant woman to detect food that has gone bad and harmful chemicals.

So what can you do about it? Nothing much. The only tip is to stay away from smells you suffer from, stay away from strong detergents, and keep your house well-ventilated. If you are in deep misery, keep in your purse a smell you like wrapped in a handkerchief (a flower, a fragrant spice or a piece of potpourri) and take a whiff for refreshment.

Do you have any tips that helped you deal with strong odors?

Do you have any stories to share with us?

Overcoming smells
written by Arwen, January 16, 2008
I work in an office where about half of the people smoke. They go outside to do so, but when they come back in, the smell of smoke is overwhelmingly nauseating. We have liquid air fresheners in our office and I steal the sealant caps off of them and keep them at my desk to sniff whenever the smell gets to me. Works like a charm!
