Do you suffer from tingling in your hands? A sense of pins and needles in your legs while you sit? Do you wake up in the morning but your hand is still “sleeping”? You may be suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome due to pregnancy.

As your abdomen expands, there is added pressure on central nerves, veins and tendons.  This causes blockage of blood to your limbs and irritates your nerves. Symptoms may be felt more during the night since the body is rested and clogged blood that was centered in your abdomen is rushing through your body.

Here are a few tips to ease this uncomfortable symptom:
• If you are sitting at work, especially near a computer, take many small breaks. This will assure continuous blood flow.
• When you go to bed, rest your hands on a pillow, so that they are elevated. This will help you not to sleep on your hands and enable free blood flow.
• Move your limbs and do releasing exercises.
• Avoid substances that obstruct blood flow (alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, fried foods)

This is only a temporary inconvenience. After the baby is born, the swelling will go away as should the numbness and tingling.
