Rubella is a disease caused by the rubella virus. Even though it was eradicated almost fully from the United States, it still hits expecting mothers.

Rubella vaccine is given in child hood as the "triple vaccine" MMR (measles, mumps, rubella). The disease is almost eradicated completely, but it sometimes comes with travelers to the US.  For all other people it is relatively harmless.  Expecting mothers are considered at risk for the illness.

Rubella symptoms are low fever, swollen glands and a red rash all over your body.  Take every precaution if you are not immune. The outcome for your baby could be catastrophic. The rubella virus can pass the placenta, causing birth defects or even a miscarriage. What ever your condition might be, tell your practitioner. If you are not immune, you will get a shot at your first prenatal test. If you have been near a person with rubella, tell your practitioner immediately.

This disease can be easily avoided and there is no reason to catch it. Be aware of your situation and all will be alright.
