The sciatic nerve is located in the lower part of the back. When the uterus expands, it might put pressure on it, causing numbness and pain to your butt, lower back and legs.

As the pregnancy progresses and the baby grows, the pain may be more frequent and sharp.  To alleviate this pain, there are a number of things you can do:

• Take many brakes during the day – out your feet up and lie down when you can to  release the pressure from your back.

• Do pelvic tilts to assuage the tender spot

• Use a heating pad and an air cushion to take off pressure from the spine

• Acupuncture can ease blood flow and dense the strain on the nerve

• Treat yourself to a massage. Make sure that it is a soft tissue massage such as Swedish or shiatsu. Deep tissue massages can worsen the situation.
