Shortness of breath is common in the second trimester and onward.

From a large increase in blood volume to an extra load on your organs, your body is working extra hard to support growing life.   The pressure on your system, combined with the enlarging uterus pressing up on your lungs may leave you gasping for air. You may find yourself short of breath even after simple tasks or a walk.

The good news is that toward the end of your pregnancy your baby will lower in position to prepare for labor, leaving more room for your lungs to expand.  Spells of shortness of breath usually occur sporadically. If you have trouble breathing for a long time or the spell does not go away, contact your doctor.
