Congratulations, you are in your third trimester! The seventh month epitomizes the essence of the last trimester - almost there, but not there yet.

Month 7Swelling galore

From your face down to your feet, you feel swollen. As your abdomen grows and drops down, the swelling in your lower abdomen, buttocks and legs may increase.  Make sure you are eating right, your blood pressure is normal and that you are in good health.

Other common symptoms are: rapid heart beat, especially in the evening hours, stronger kicks and fetal movement, backache, shortness of breath, breast changes and leaking colostrum, frequent urination, vaginal discharge, groin and pelvic pain, heartburn and constipation.

You are growing at a rate of 1-1.5 pounds a week. The growth is affecting your body and may make you forgetful and dizzy, a symptom called "pregnancy haze".  It is important to be attentive to your physical health and to take good care of yourself.

When should I see my doctor?

Make sure to visit your practitioner if any of these symptoms are severe or last for a long time. Do not be ashamed to go whenever you need and ask any question no matter how inconsequential it may seem . Your mental state is important, and there is no point in worrying about issues that can be resolved by a visit or a phone call.

Explaining a High-Risk Pregnancy

High risk pregnancy is a term used by obstetricians to describe a mother with a higher chance of complications during pregnancy and/or birth. It does not mean your baby is in danger, it just means your doctor should be aware of all the factors. If you are categorized as one, consult with your doctor for further explanation and advice.

Braxton Hicks or real contractions?

Braxton Hicks may have given you a scare a month or two ago, but by now you may have come to expect them. How do you know if you are suffering from false contractions or the real thing?

Real contractions can be measured by an accurate pattern.  They commonly last one minute and occur at intervals of five minutes. Another way to know is that normal contractions are more intense and are spaced closer together.  Keep in mind that ninety percent of births occur near the due date (at least after week 37), so the risk of premature birth is small.

How are you feeling?

In this month you may be overwhelmed by birth classes, baby proofing the house and an abundance of birthing decisions from choosing the right birth location to packing a bag for the hospital stay.  Feeling eager to experience the birth and to meet the baby that has been growing inside you is common. Take a breath and make time for relaxation. You are almost there!
