The period after delivery is an intense one, filled with excitement and happiness alongside fatigue and stress.

In order to get through this period in the best possible way, the most important thing is to be good to yourself!  One of the most important elements in this period is sleep.  Naturally, you won't get enough of it, but if possible allow yourself a rest during the day.  In any case, remember that the lack of sleep will have effect on your general feeling and might make you feel a bit down.  Almost all mothers go through this; it is apparently part of the job…

Whether you are breastfeeding or not, maintaining a healthy routine after giving birth is of great importance, a healthy diet and moderate exercise will help your body in the post delivery healing process.  If you are breastfeeding, then your baby's diet still depends completely on your intake.  So the case is still that not only you are what you eat - so is your baby.  Even though the time after delivery is not exactly a time of leisure in which you have the energy to stand and cook meals, try to make an effort to keep a good variety of foods with high nutritional value.  If possible, have someone else cook for you in the first couple of months after giving birth.

Regarding physical activity, you should start slowly, waiting about 4-6 weeks after delivery.  Physical activity that isn't suited to your condition and is too strenuous can obstruct a healthy healing process and at times might even affect your milk supply.  Discuss any fitness plans you have with your healthcare practitioner and pay close attention to your body to know when to stop or take a break.
