What is amniocentesis? How is done? Is it essential? These are questions commonly asked by moms. It is an "op-test" – a test which is optional and not every woman needs to undergo it. Amniocentesis is taken between the 15th to the 20th week, searches for genetic and chromosomal abnormalities. It is done by extracting amniotic fluid from the uterus. The fear for most women is the procedure itself. A large needle is inserted into your belly, extracting the fluid from inside the uterus, in the amniotic sac. The other fear is the chance of miscarriage. The fact is that this test increases the chance of miscarriage by only one percent. In comparison, smoking or alcohol increases the chance much more. To do the test or not? Amniocentesis searches for chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome and genetic diseases (Tay-Sachs, sickle cell anemia). Later in the pregnancy the test is done in cases of induced labor, to measure the lung maturity of the baby. Amniocentesis is suggested for women over 35. In any case, you should consult your practitioner, go through the risk factors and your family's medical history to determine the necessity of the test.
