The baby’s sleeping schedule becomes more regular and synchronized with the outside environment.

Your Baby

The skin is becoming less clear now and more opaque.  The baby’s sleeping schedule becomes more consistent.  Medical research suggests that the environment affects the baby’s sleep pattern while in the womb.  The amount of light, noise and your lifestyle patterns serve as signals for the baby’s own rhythm.

At this point the baby’s length is measured from the top of the head to the heal, and the baby should measure about 10.5 inches!

Changes in your Body

The average expected weight gain at this point is about 10 to 15 pounds.  Put up your feet when possible to reduce ankle swelling.

As your hormone levels stabilize, you may feel more peaceful and relaxed emotionally.  The uterus rises to about an inch above the naval.

You may want to inquire about childbirth classes at this point.  Childbirth classes can teach you  to recognize the symptoms of labor, familiarize you with the process of birth and give you invaluable techniques and advice for dealing with pain.  Classes should cover the first stages of motherhood as well, teaching newborn care and breastfeeding techniques.  Check your local hospital or ask your healthcare provider about classes scheduled in your area.

Until week 21 the baby's length is measured from crown to rump; from the week 21 it is measured head to toe.
