Pregnancy is a state of health for a woman.  Keeping this in mind, there are some activities that are advised against during pregnancy as they may pose certain risks.  In addition, special conditions of each pregnancy might call for different guidelines.

What you should do before Beginning

Take advice from you physician or midwife regarding your personal condition and make sure that the person who instructs you is aware of your pregnancy.  If you already work out, then ask for advice as to what you should change if at all in your exercising routine, under the new circumstances.

The Basics

Exercising doesn't mean you have to turn into the next Jane Fonda during your pregnancy. Going around the block with your spouse or a friend will contribute to your general health and feeling. If you sit in a chair most of the day, get up and move around at least once an hour. If you are at home watching TV, skip the commercials and walk around the house for a bit. It's not as hard as it seems!

A bit More of a Challenge

If you are up for a greater challenge, there are many different options you can choose from according to your natural inclination.

You can rent or buy a video with exercises for pregnant women, prenatal yoga or whatever you enjoy most. You should be able to find them at your local library or video store, in maternity clothing stores, the hospital or other health care provider.

Using a video means you can workout in your free time when it is convenient for you, which certainly has its advantages due to the hectic demands of daily life.

If you need someone to motivate you and prefer working out with instruction, sign up for a session with a fitness trainer who knows about physical activity during pregnancy. You can do this at a community center, YMCA, or a gym.

There are many other options including: prenatal yoga classes, aqua aerobics or other fitness classes. Just take your pick. And have a healthy and comfortable pregnancy!
