Group B Streptococcus is a pathogen that can cause illness and even death, especially in newborn infants and the elderly.  It is estimated that between 10 to 30 percent of women have the bacteria in their vagina or rectum. GBS in babies can cause sepsis, a blood infection, pneumonia, and meningitis. Some of these babies, especially those who suffer from meningitis, will have severe health issues such as vision dysfunction and brain damage. Babies infected have a 5% chance of survival.

It is recommended that all women test for GBS. The test is done around the 36th week of pregnancy.  A swab of the vagina and rectum is taken during a pelvic exam.  There is no risk involved in the test, only slight discomfort.

In cases of premature labor, ruptured membranes or fever during labor, an IV antibiotic is given to protect the baby from getting infected.
