Choosing a name for your baby is a big deal to most expecting parents. In order to come up with a baby name, many parents look up the meaning of the name they plan on giving their child. The baby name can have many different meanings, ranging from literal meanings, to spiritual, to moral and even emotional meanings.

Many names have literal meanings. Parents who strive to pick a meaningful name for their baby, especially favor these names. For example, a couple that has experienced infertility for a long period and then receives news that they are expecting, may decide to name their son “Matthew” (meaning “gift of the Lord”) or their daughter “Dorothy” (meaning “gift of God”). Further names that have a literal meaning associated with them are:

Alexander - “helper or protector of mankind”
Andrew – “manly” or “brave”
Arnold – “strong as an eagle”
David – “beloved”
Ryan – “little king”

Abigail – “father's joy”
Clare – “clear” or “bright”
Naomi – “pleasant”
Jennifer – “white”, “fair” or “smooth”
Julietta – “youthful”
Zoe – “life”

Virtue names have been around for centuries and are a popular choice among expecting parents. With many parents focusing their consciousness back to moral values, the virtue names are gaining in popularity. Giving your child a name with a moral value adds meaning to your child’s name and may make give them a sense of responsibility in staying true to their name's meaning. Among the most popular virtue names are the names Faith, Grace, and Hope. Other girl’s virtue names include: Amity, Charity, Chastity, Felicity, Freedom, Harmony, Honor, Liberty, Mercy, Modest, and Patience. While virtue names are far more popular for girls that for boys, names like Chance and Justice work for both sexes.

Are you a nature lover? Even if you are not a nature lover, giving your baby a name related to nature allows you to choose a meaningful and unique baby name. There are many beautiful flower, plant and tree names to choose from - Aloe, Anise, Blossom, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Ivy, Maple, Quince, Sage, Savine, or Violet.

Emotion is a key component of life. Having a baby is a joyous and exciting time for parents. If you want to keep away from traditional names like James, John, Rachel, and Anne, you may consider giving your child a unique and meaningful name. By choosing a name after an emotion felt when the pregnancy news were received or after the emotion felt at birth, you and your partner are giving your child an identity of a special person. The names Bliss, Delight, Happy, Happiness, Joy, Love, Passion, or Pleasure are without doubt a cute choice for your little bundle of joy!
