Which name is hotter, is it Osama or George ? Well, it depends who you ask. When choosing a name for a baby, many of us feel it is the most important thing to have a name that is close to you and your partner's heart, giving less consideration to opinions of friends, family, or the current trends in society. While this is probably a good way to go at it, the question is asked – to what degree can we really separate ourselves from what is going on around us? Or in other words – can we really ignore trends? {exitpoll id=1} Looking at the statistics from the last ten years gives us an answer – no, we can't. Even the desire for unique and unusual names, we find more and more in parents today, can be considered as a trend – the traditional, some might say old fashioned names, very popular up to just one decade ago, are slowly fading away in the new generation. The 21'st century is definitely characterized by individuality and creativity in choosing baby names. While during the 1950's the top ten list of most popular names accounted for a quarter of all babies born on those years, today the top ten list accounts for less than a tenth. Once popular names such as John, Jim, Fred, Hanna, and others are now considered too ordinary and old for most parents. Visit our Advanced Search Tool to search for names that are most popular among our readers. Naturally, as in any kind of trend, there are those "fashion victims", the ones who take too far and choose a name so extraordinary, that it is considered bizarre and could cause serious problems for their child, especially growing up and during puberty. We see a lot of these amongst Hollywood celebrity babies, where all rules seem to be broken, and standing out is the only objective – e.g. Apple (Gwenyth Paltrow), Camera (Arthur Ashe) or Zola Ivy (Eddie Murphy). For a child without a famous background, these names could become a hurdle. Unique as these new-age names might be, it seems most of them fall into one or more of a few categories:

Re:Different Spellings

I felt much the same way about unique spelling at first. We gave our daughter a unique name but common spelling, Sierra. Then, my husband and I agreed on Jason for our son. But that was just too common for me, so we spelled it phonetically, Jaysen. I love it. Being someone who had to spell my name all my life, I can boldly say, I don't mind correcting them at all. I like the conversation it strikes up. The person makes the name, for sure.

I agree with the above poster that said she told her family the names she picked and got upset by their comments. I am 38 weeks pregnant with my third girl and we are naming her Harley Lynn. My first two daughters are named Syndey and Jamie, which both names can be boy or girl names, and that's what I was going for when I picked Harley for this baby. Plus I don't care for "girly girl" names, or trendy names. Anyway, my sister must call me every other day to give me new names to consider because she and other family members feel bad for my "poor baby" who has to live with the name Harley. Fortunately, I'm not one to care what other people think, it just aggravates me how some people don't think about hurting your feelings. We are hormonal enough with out people adding to it, right? lol anyway, just thought I'd share my opinion. Good luck!
Helpful hints with family names...

We have two beautiful kids:
Louis Jayden is our son & Mikaela Tatum is our daughter My father-in-law is Louis and my dad's initials are LJ, so no one can say anything, coz he has something of both families. But we call him Jayden. I also hate it when people presume that a person's first name is the name used! We call our daughter Mikaela. When she is older and likes the name Tatum more, its totally up to her! I heard the my children have very English names given our very South African Afrikaans surname... Can't people just mind their own darn business?! Hope this helps someone!! Comment by Elaine du P. (17 June)

Hiya Elaine - (I've never written on here, I'm always on the Baby Names Forum). I'm an Aussie married to Nicolas de Villiers. It was my decision to give our kids French or French-sounding names as yours and our surnames are of French Huguenot descent. He is bi-lingual (because his mother is S.African English) and I'd like Joely Dior (4) and our son Danerik Jacques (Nic's second name) due in Nov., to be as well (easier for them at school) No one has questioned why I haven't given them Afrikaans names and I know loads of Afrikaners with English first names. Joely is n.n. JD and Danerik will be DJ or Danny. cheers

choosing the perfect name...
written by Amanda, June 30, 2008
My fiance and I agreed that whatever name we choose, no one would no until the baby is born.. because his mother had picked a name for his brother and her mother didn't like it and told her no that her she was naming her son what she wanted and she did.. i don't want someone else naming my child! I don't want to be rude to anyone but I feel everyone has already named their children that it's my turn... also Donna, Harley is a beautiful name and i like it better for a girl than i do for a boy!!! good luck

I love some unique names and naming kids with "old fashioned" names..
For twins, do you want your babies to have the same letter name, or to "match" the names or no matter...?! Levi (for a boy) and Liana (Lola, Leah Lia, Lisa, Luciana or Lucy, Laura...) for girls. I love the name Max (imilian) and love love love the name Maisie. I think that that particular spelling is a little more original than the regular, Macy. My cousins name is Kailyn and I thought that was a beautiful name as well. Kailyn Marie. other names: Boys- Andrew (Andy) Beau Joshua (Joe) Isaac Lucas Thomas Cumming Benjamin Paul Girls- Shiloh (Lola or Shy) Maisie Grace Julia Camille Bethanie Cruz Vanessa Ella Violet Emma Kailyn Vivienne Sophia (or sophie) madeline Alejandra (Allie) Arianna Mia Amalia Nora Josephine Alice Kate Eloise Josephine Tiffanie Zara hope some of these help!
