The former country of Czechoslovakia had a traditional naming heritage, and the peaceful split in 1993 into the Czech Republic and Slovakia continued this tradition. The two countries have very similar languages (Czech and Slovak) that came from the Slavic language. If you have Czech or Slovak ancestry or are looking for a fun and different baby name, come see our list of very unique Slavic names for baby boys and baby girls!

There are two common elements that pop up often in Czech and Slovak names -- "slav" which means "glory" and "mir" which means "great or famous." Many names are compound names formed from Slavonic elements, including one of these two. In general, Czech and Slovak names are phonetically spelled (that is, they are spelled like they sound) and the stress, or emphasis, will often fall on the first syllable.

Czech and Slovak names are also known for having nicknames or pet names, similar to other Slavonic languages such as Russian. These are often formed by adding a new ending to a name, and are used in everyday situations! We have included nicknames as well as shortened versions for several of the names here.
