Are you looking for a unique and unusual baby girl name? There are many different sources for baby names that you can become inspired by -- the natural world being a fast favorite.

Cute baby girlThe natural world is full of wonderful, everyday (and not-so-everyday) words that can (and often are) used as names for babies. Whether you are looking at names of animals, plants, natural wonders or common elements, you can find many ideas for unusual baby girl names in the world around you.

Green Baby Names

So you love birds? Then you might be interested in the following names which all mean "bird" in their respective languages and origins: Ava (might be derived from the Latin word avis), Altaira (which is of Arabic origin), Cholena (this is a Delaware Indian word) or Zippora (Hebrew).

How about the sun? Clytie, of Greek origin, was the name of a nymph who was in love with Helios (the sun). Elektra is also of Greek origin and means "bright and radiant." Helia is another name you might consider -- it is a variant of the name Helen which means "sun, ray or shining light."

Tree- and plant based names are also in wild abudance in nature. Consider Ilana, which is Hebrew for "tree." Tamar is derived from the more common Tamara, which is of Hebrew origin and means "date palm." Dara is a Gaelic name that means "oak tree." Other unusual names meaning "tree" are: Elana (Hebrew), Idra (Aramaic) and Tirzah (Hebrew). Aven is a lovely name that is of English origin and is the name of a plant with red and yellow flowers.

Color Baby Names

You can also find an assortment of names based on the rainbow (such as Amitola, which is of Native American origin and means "rainbow"). If you find that one color makes you happiest, you might consider naming your child after that color. For example, if you love brown, Afra is a name of Arabic origin that means either "young deer" or "color of the earth." It can also be written Aphra, as did Aphra Behn's parents in the 17th century (she was a famous writer in England). Cyanea (Greek) means "sky blue," Ula (Scandinavian) means "sacred red," Aranka (Latin) means "golden," Flavia (Latin) means "yellow hair," Midori (Japanese) means "green" and Fiala (Czechoslovakian) means "violet."

Jewel Baby Names

Jewels are another source of inspiration. In addition to more familiar jewel names such as Ruby and Pearl, you might consider these: Bijou is a French name that means "jewel" -- and Cordula, of Latin origin, also means "jewel."

More Unusual Girl Names

Other unusual baby girl names from nature are: Iamar (Arabic), Lewanna (Hebrew), Magena (Native American) and Miakoda  (Native American), all of which mean "moon;" Anan (Arabic) and Aolani (Hindu) both of which mean "clouds;" Abey (Native American) which means "leaf," Arava (Hebrew) which means "willow or arid land," Moriah (Hebrew) which means "hill counry," Bryn (Welsh) which means "hills," Avani (Sanskrit) which means "earth" and Maia (Greek) means "great mother."

You needn't stray too far to discover an original and unusual baby name for your daughter -- look right outside your door, look to the night sky or explore a nature dream -- the perfect name may be just a step away.
