The latest explosion of made-up and unique baby names among celebrity parents is taking the tabloids by storm.  The UK Times Online has published a list of what they pinned as the “50 Craziest Celebrity Baby Names.”

Among the lucky originals to top the list are Audio Science (Shannyn Sossamon), Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily (Paula Yates and Michael Hutchence), Pilot Inspektor (Jason Lee and Beth Riesgraf), and Jermajesty (Jermaine Jackson and Alejandra Genevieve Oaziaza).  But with all the spotlight on the new baby trend in celebrity circles, it can be easy to miss a national wave that is taking the baby naming game to a whole new level.
Take the national Social Security data on popular baby names, and one can find unique and made-up names taking over the charts.  With names such as Nevaeh (heaven spelled backwards) and Brooklyn skyrocketing in national popularity, it is a wonder if the celebrity baby names thought of as “crazy” today will even inspire a wink a few years down the line.  And what is it that labels these names as “crazy” anyway?  It may  simply  be because Fifi Trixibell (Bob Geldof and Paula Yates) is a long cry away from Jennifer or Samantha, but with more and more parents giving their babies untraditional names, the entire way we think of the genre may be about to change.

The UK Times suggests celebrity babies are “blessed with a moniker likely to give… problems in the school playground,” but let us not forget the ease with which a name can be changed these days.  Let us assume these babies will not have financial concerns when it comes to paying for the process, but who’s to say the names really will cause problems?  If a Pilot Inspektor is surrounded by peer Bluebells and Cameras, does it really make a difference?  Perhaps its time to leave the outrageous headlines to the more serious concerns of the world, and let both the parents and the babies of tomorrow enjoy their right to be unique and playful with their baby name decisions.

For those looking for inspiration, here is a list of the Top 50 originals:

Aanisah (Macy Gray)
Apple (Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow)
Astrella Celeste (Donovan and Linda Lawrence)
Atherton Grace (Don Johnson and Kelley Phleger)

I have 2 beautiful boys my oldest is Nash he is 2 1/2 and then I have Kobi he is 16 months and I am 3 months preg. I am looking for a short unusual name but not to bad to be picked on at school. I find most older people don't really like our names at first but then they get used to them. we love them....
what's in a name?
written by PB, January 02, 2008
I like unique but SIMPLE names. There are a LOT of John Smiths, Janes, etc.. when you are at school, who knows YOU from whom? So I agree with being special and different, but there has to be some thought and limits.

Also John, James, Jane, Sara, especially when the last name is equally simple such as Smith is very difficult when you get older due to social security issues... getting a mortgage and there are a bazillion John Smiths with bad credit and you have to prove you aren't the one is tough.

HOWEVER, some of these celeb names go way over the edge though! The poor child needs to be able to spell his or her name, so don't make it LONG and or too odd, make sure it doesn't rhyme with something undesirable.

Think of something unique, but short, EASILY PRONOUNCED, and check out what the name MEANS in other countries as well. Make sure it doesn't rhyme with something undesirable, or a nickname can't be attached that is undesirable. Give it some real thought, this is who your baby will grow up to BE.

Suri (if one pronounces it correctly) can be compared to "surly" - which means bad attitde, or mood.

I went to school with a friend who's last name was Terry. His mom and dad named him "guess what?" TERRY! He got ridiculed all the time because his name was Terry Terry. Of course it could have been worse... another person whose last name was "Tiddy" (stop laughing, true story - I swear!) first name Richard, but called Dick... married a woman who's real name I don't know, but had always gone by the nickname of "Biddy " ok, so now we have Dick and Biddy Tiddy, I only hope and pray they don't have a girl and name her Iddy........

So, again, give it some serious thought, and be sober when you decide what your child is going to grow up with as their name. Your name is who you are, your brand and affects every facet of your life... it bears serious consideration. Sticking some poor child with some of these idiotic monikers listed here should be considered child abuse ;-)
Get over it.

If that is what they want to name their child then they should be able to.
I have a Hana, Levi and Raliegh. Yes they are spelled correctly, (I should know). I love family names that carry on, but don't go there for something like Mehitable.

I can understand some of the names. But at least none of these kids will get confused if people are talking to them or not!
Hmmm! Let the name find you.
written by EZ, January 15, 2008
I think the name should find the child. We are all unique and to saddle someone with a name that another 5 million people have seems restrictive.
I would love to meet Pilot & see what he has to say when he is 5.
My 2 year old son Canyon Asher gives me inspiration every day.

Namaste
I love unique names!!
written by Namelvr, February 03, 2008
I love the names that celebrities name their kids!! Those names are unique and beautiful, and I can't see why people don't like them. When I adopt my kids, I'm considering names like Tallulah, Rumer, Sarafina, Sage, Joss or Luna. I want my children to have different names, not boring, typical ones like Jen, or Rebecca.

dont get me wrong i love my name, but come on it's very common. i have not had a child yet but i plan to and i have also lost 2 of my 5 siblings both being sisters so i would love to work there names into my future childrens. so i think unique names are great but meaningful and original can be beautiful too.
whatever floats your boat

Im a huge fan of names not found in the top 1000. Sure, some of these names are definately a bit "out there", but odds are these celebrity offspring will be changing their names by the time they are 16 anyways. My daughters names are Novalea Faith and Irelyn Grace. Not too off the wall, but not common either. My husband and I are expecting our third girl in July but have yet to come up with a name.
original names are great
written by philomena, April 06, 2008
common names are niice, but when everyone has the same name it can get confusing. I don't have any kids yet but babies are always popping out in my family. Some of them have normal, strange and original names.my name is of greek origin, but i am not greek i think you can name your child whatever you want as long as you like it!
My name is . . .
written by Cynthia, April 14, 2008
I agree that some, not all, of the names listed are truly without merit. I am surprised at how many people make remarks about names like Poppy, Shiloh, and Willow to name, but a few, and no one mentions the name Phinneaus that Julia Roberts chose for her son as being off the wall. Bluebelle and Poppy are names of flowers as are Rose, Lily, Iris and Violet yet no one finds these names odd. Names like Ivy and Holly are fine but Willow and Rowan are deemed unacceptable.
I like traditional just as well as unique names.

i kind of like fifi trixibell. but they should have put her sisters name, peaches honeyblossom, othere was also another named daisy boo. that name is okay. i think these celebs just want to stand out and get as much attention as they can! my sons name is parker james and my daughter will be named barbi leana. i like uncommon names mixed with familiar names.
Family thing *
written by Strange Names, April 17, 2008
Our history of strange names has come along way... my mother is tyler paris, I am Vadra, my brother is Wraith Vaughn-Lain, and my little one to be (in Nov.) is going to be Ocean Phoenix. I think it's all in the person you raise, thier confidence level and letting them make the name thier own.

crazy names, what to say? those kids will be teased and offended ( benhide their backs) because of their names. but, they and everyone should name their kid like you want, i like unique names too and also old-fashioned, together they go great. but i still think that with CAMERA and APPLE they over did ti!
