Looking for a baby name that will appeal to anyone that hears it?  You may want to get in line for one of the newest baby name popularity books to hit the stands,  The New Baby Name Survey.  The number one author on baby names has come up with the latest theory on what makes names likable. 

Surveying what people think of today’s 2,000 most popular baby names, baby name expert author Bruce Lansky explores baby name popularity on the level of associations.  Tens of thousands of parents were surveyed for what they feel about today’s top baby names, creating a record of baby name profiles that may make any parent-to-be curious.  Will such a book on hand, is there still a need for asking others what they think of your baby name choices? 

In a recent interview with CBS News on his latest baby name book, Bruce Lansky states, "I don't know why it's more important now than before, but let me tell you what's feeding into the anxiety, or frenzy," Lansky remarked to Smith. "Parents (want) the best for their kids, and they wanna do their best by their kids. Now, anything they can do that moves their kids ahead, like a good education, is good. A good name can be like a good education, because it makes a quick, positive impression. And puts their kid ahead.” However, parents should consider that what may sound like a name that can bring success today, may not be a name that may carry the same associations 20 years down the line.

Lansky himself goes on to say, "Harry" is a "very cool, hip" name at the moment. "It brings to mind Harry Potter." But not long ago, Harry was associated with old fogies.”  Baby names, like all trends, come and go, and it may be worth considering the classics that have stood the test of time if one wants to be on the safe side.  The Michaels, Joshuas and Matthews of the world have lasted as popular names throughout the changing waves of baby name trends. 

Although there is no telling where the current top names will be tomorrow, it is almost a sure bet that there will be enough Michaels in the next few generations not to hinder one’s success if named as such.  Associations aside, it is the personality that ultimately makes a name.  As for more daring and exotic names, parents should consider that their beloved baby will carry the name throughout all of its life, with any pronunciation corrections and associations that may come with it.    For parents concerned about the reaction their name choices may bring, Lansky’s book may be the chance to fulfill that curiosity.
