Many parents today are interested in using name numerology as a tool to name their baby boy. Did you find out you were pregnant on the fifth of the month, feel baby’s first kick on the fifth, and is your due date on the fifth? Sometimes there are numbers in our life that just seem to pop up over and over again – and when you start to notice a pattern, it can be hard to ignore. Whatever it is that has numbers on your mind, perhaps the universe is trying to tell you something and you may want to consider the ancient practice of numerology when determining the best name for your baby boy.
The Elements of Numerology
Numerology is a study of numbers and their influence on an individual’s life. Many people believe that numbers hold power and meaning -- so why not use that element when looking for the perfect name for your baby boy?
For baby-naming purposes, we’re looking at numerology that assigns number values to each letter of the alphabet.
The chart below will help you calculate the numerology – or destiny number – of your son’s full birth name (first, middle, and last).
You simply add together the letters of his name (and, if necessary, adding again, and again) until they reach one single digit.
This final number is meant to symbolize your child’s potential – their character, talents, strengths, weaknesses, and life purpose.
Numbers Assigned to the Alphabet
Here are the numbers assigned to each letter of the alphabet:
1 – A, J, S
2 – B, K, T
3 – C, L, U
4 – D, M, V
5 – E, N, W
6 – F, O, X
7 – G, P, Y
8 – H, Q, Z
9 – I, R
For example, look at this formula for the destiny number of the president of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama (do not use nicknames or Jr. and Sr. when calculating numerology):
Barack: 2 + 1 + 9 + 1 + 3 + 2 = 18; 8+1= 9
Hussein: 8 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 5 + 9 + 5 = 32; 3+2=5
Obama: 6 + 2 + 1 +4 + 1 = 14; 4+1= 5
9 + 5 + 5 =19; 9+1= 10; 1+0=1
Barack Obama’s destiny number is 1. What does that mean? Well, in the practice of numerology, numbers also correspond to personality traits. It would seem that President Obama has lived up to his destiny number.
Personality Traits Assigned to Destiny Number
1 – Ambitious, independent, self-sufficient.
2 – Supportive, analytical, courteous.
3 – Enthusiastic, optimistic, persuasive.
4 – Serious, hard-working, determined.
5 – Adventurous, sensual, flexible, clever.
6 – Responsible, careful, loving, healing.
7 – Spiritual, eccentric, introverted, observant.
8 – Money-oriented, decisive, practical.
9 – Multi-talented, compassionate, career-driven.
11 – Enlightened, intense, high-strung.
22 – Goal-oriented, a leader, balanced.
The numbers 11 and 22 are included on this list as they are considered “master numbers” in numerology. A name that adds up to 11 or 22 can be interpreted by researching the characteristics and associations with that number alone; however, the holder of one of these numbers can add the numbers again and get a second number: 2 (1 + 1) or 4 (2 + 2). This provides even deeper insight into one’s destiny.
Creating a Happy Baby and Happy Home
Numerology can also indicate a level of compatibility between child and parent(s). When you select a name for your young man that is in harmony with yours and that of your partner’s, the chances of having a happy home are greatly increased. Likewise, there are some numbers that create a greater challenge between son and father, or son and mother, or son and both parents. Obviously, this is not a desirable situation for any family! A quick online search will return a number of numerology compatibility charts between parents and child.
Here’s a quick example: If the parents’ names have the numbers 1 and 9 associated with them, a child with a number of 1, 3, 5, or 9 is more likely to be compatible with both parents. The number 7 will see the child in better harmony with the parent who has the number 1 (but not so good with the parent who has 9 associated with their name); vice versa for the number 6. Numbers 2, 4, and 8 are unlikely to be compatible with either parent.
One of the easiest approaches to finding a compatible and positive number for your child is by playing around with the numerology of his middle name. His last name is likely set in stone, so settle on a first name that you love and then work on fitting in a middle moniker that will equal your destiny number of choice. For instance, if you want your son to have a destiny number of 7, and his first name equals 5 and his last name equals 9 (which total 14 and are then reduced to 5), then you need to find a middle name with the value of 2.
Select the naming formula that you believe will be most beneficial for your child. When it comes down to it, the significance and meaning of a name is varied and far-reaching. Your son’s name is important, but it’s how you teach and raise him that will ultimately determine where his future will lead.
