Baby Names Book
Can a name affect your child’s future? | Can a name affect your child’s future? |

Do you associate certain names with personality traits? How do you believe a name can influence one’s life, or not? There are various reasons for our final decision of what name to give to a baby. For some the decision is based on pure intuition, such as coming across a name that they feel is “it”; for others it is a process of careful selection based on meaning, tradition and the parent’s wishes for the effect their chosen name will have on the life of the child. Whatever the naming method, a given name follows a child throughout their lives and becomes closely associated with their sense of self. So what is the extent of the name’s importance? As if choosing a name isn’t hard already, should parents feel they are choosing much more than what to call their child? Most names in existence today have been brought down to our time by generations of various cultures and ethnicities and have meanings that are either direct translations of the word or a translation of a word or roots of words that may not be in common use today. It seems that the world at large, throughout generations, has chosen to give meaningful names to their children. How do we, as the new generation building what is to come, value the importance of the meaning of a name? More ideas ? Please add your comments below. Comments (16)

I strongly believe a name affects the personality and more.

I definitely believe that a child's name affects their personality and looks, maybe. Think about it, most everyone you know has a name that really fits who they are!
Really...

Hmmm... A child's name affects their personality, looks, etc... What about genetics, enviornment...
Did you think that maybe most people's names fit them because you know them by that name? If they were to suddenly change names, it wouldn't fit them anymore because you know them by the original name. Also, research shows that people from specific socioecon class have a tendency to name their children certain names,so that probably plays in also. ...

I don't think a name has anything to do with personality, looks?. My name is Modesty and no I'm not modest my mother just liked the name. People grow into there names but I just don't if you give your child a name he/she is going to mold into that name I think it's visa versa. Personality comes with or without a fitting name.
My Future?
written by Nkiruka, November 21, 2007
Nkiruka (N-KEY-ROO-KAH) is my name and it is a very popular name in Nigeria. It means "the future is greater." My parents feel in love with its meaning while living in Nigeria. And I too have fallen in love with the meaning.
The question, in this blog, is has this name affected my future. I really believe it has. As a child I was made fun of for the name and for being different. But what I learned, in undergad, is it that the meaning of my named challenged me to not be mediocre. I have set goals and accommplished them, by the grace of God, of which my parents never even dreamed. And my future is even greater than my past. They will be just fine.

I use to hate me name.
ill-sa (ill as in illness not EL-sa) It was so different, and people always had a hard time saying it. When they did have a hard time, they would just try to call my something that sounded like ilsa. But i would always correct them. Never in a rude way, but just enough to let them know that they were saying my name incorrect. After growing up a little, (and when i say a little i mean a little. I'm only 15 now.) i grew to LOVE my name. Its so unique and out there. Maybe not in Germany, But here in America it is. Its good to have a different name. People will remember you. At first a "different" name can be a little tough, but at the end of the day, they will be just fine. Yes

I think that names do have an important role in a child's future. There are some names that just put you down, I don't know the names i chose for the kids I want are I think strong names. They aren't anything fancy or original, but they aren't overly common as Jessica and Ashley or John and Michael.
Not at all true
written by Jazmine, November 28, 2007
Has no one noticed that names have dramaticly changed since the 1900's? It is not the name that makes the child it is the parent. My name (Jazmine)came after a stripper who was a friend of my mother and I did not grow up to be just like her nor do I look like a flower. A name is just that a name. It is just something to be called by not the make up of who you are. Only you can choose who you really are.

Most sights that I look up the meaning of my name I find that I fit the description, but I don't think a name has anything to with how you grow to be. I think its by chance if you fit the description of your name. How you are deals with the values you were taught and the enviroment you grew up in, not in what you're named.

I think that a name may influence to a small extent an individuals persona, however, it does not ultimately determine who that individual will grow into or how successful they will be in their future. The name itself may inspire the individual to achieve great things, however, it is not so powerful such that it dictates the fate of an individual.
yes i do!!!

A name can make someone who they are. If a child (person) has a unique/different name they can see them selves as just that. Special and unique. Can differ from others (in a positive way). I turely beleive that a name is not what you are but who you are. If one looks close enough.
Birth Announcement
written by Peachbelle, December 09, 2007
There was a recent birth announcement in the newspaper that broke my heart for the baby... the initials spell out L.U.N.A.T.I.C !
What kind of lunatic would saddle an innocent child with this? This is nothing more than child abuse of the worst kind, following this poor child for the rest of his life. Changing my name ~

I am no longer my fathers child (he's dead), my mother has remarried to a name i don't want, i'm no longer my husbands wife (we're divorced) but i still carry his last name because of my children (but they are grown & married into other last names).
So now i am studying names to find the most suitable for me. All my life i've done nothing but clean, clean, clean, and tend to other peoples children. The classic CLEANING WOMAN AND NANNY. So one day i couldn't understand why my life has never gotten any further than being a cleaning woman/nanny. I just happened to pick up a dictionary and looked up my names. Charlene is my middle name and the definition of Char is CLEANING WOMAN!!! I was heartsick, i was branded from birth to be a cleaning woman! And my first name is Nancy, ...nanny. I long to earn my living in some other way, so i am researching names so i can change all 3 of my names, in hopes that my future will change for the better. Yes it does!

Your name does create an "idea" about you. Think about successful men & women for a moment...they aren't named Brittany, Alyssa, Sasha, Gunner, Cody, Nash etc. When is the last time you read about a CFO named Josh for example - and would you take the President of your Union seriously if her name were "Makayla"? Give it some thought before you choose a fluffy trendy name for your child. Trust me, my name is Lisa - but at least my Mom didn't whimp out and give me the middle name "Marie". Thank God!

My son's name is KARLAN. It means "STRONG MAN". I wanted a name which is unusual with a good meaning and also writing and reading would be the same in Turkish, where I originally came from. I found the name in an English name dictionary in London, where I live and the name is originated from German name Karl.
I completely agree with Renay S. I don't believe a person's name has a big effect on someone's personality or looks. But lets hope it is the other way around. Considering the meaning of Karlan. Names affect how other's see you written by V. Simmons, February 14, 2008
I have a cousin named Nekeisha, who is extremely bright was always on the honor roll in school, graduated cum laude at her University (3 years ago). But I believe that because of her name, people do not give her a chance or take her seriously. She still has not found a decent job, the only people willing to hire her are fast food places and hotels (as a cleaning lady) she applied for front desk manager and they instead offered her a cleaning job. Come on!!! By looking at her you can tell she does not belong cleaning after others for a living. But who wants a front desk manager named Nekeisha. Poor thing is now considering changing her name.
