Ethan remains the most popular baby boy name in British Columbia for the sixth year in a row, and baby girl name Ava replaces the perennial favorite Emma for the second year running. 

2008 has not yet hit the halfway point, yet the name stats are already up, putting British Columbia at the forefront of the baby name trend watch.  Among male names, James hit the top third with a surprise, rising from its 16th spot within a year. Noah went down to sixth place from third, and Logan replaced Liam in the fourth spot. William has disappeared off the top 20, along with Jayden and Tyler.  Beloved and increasingly popular in the United States, Aidan has entered BC's top 20 this year and is a name to watch in the next months.

Among female names, Chloe has had the greatest success this year, jumping from tenth to second place and knocking Emily down to third.  The name Sophia has had a spelling upgrade, with the spelling "Sophie" becoming more favored than its traditional counterpart. Likely contenders for the top spots at the end of 2008 are Abigail and Maya, both of which have made great strides toward the top give in the past few months.

For a taste of BC baby name history, back in '97 the top names for boys were Matthew, Nicholas and Joshua, and among newborn girls Emily, Sarah and Jessica.  Jacob and Emily have been the most lasting choices, enduring naming trend explosions for more than a decade.
