The top baby names for boys and girls in Georgia follow some interesting national trends, but the Peach State also sets a few standards of their own. Looking at the most recent statistics from the Social Security Administration, this list offers comparisons between Georgia baby-naming trends and those across the U.S., as well as some stand-out names that are sure to keep Georgia on your mind.

Baby eating a peachSouthern Charm

While some names are categorized as especially modern – no matter what state you live in – the South is still well-known for its charm and hospitality. So it should come as no surprise that many classic names – some perhaps considered quintessentially southern – are being given to Georgia newborns.

William makes the top of the list for boys. This name has held the number 1 spot since 1998, when it unseated Christopher which had been on the top rung since 1982. And while the final boy name in the top 25 for Georgia may seem particularly southern, Landon is actually at number 36 nationwide and has been steadily moving up the ranks over the past decade.

Madison and Emily have been vying for the top spot for girls since 2001. Madison held first place until 2003 when Emily took over for a few years. In 2007, Madison reclaimed the title and is still holding strong.

And Georgia doesn’t have a monopoly on the name Savannah. Though it comes in at number 33 in the state, it’s growing in stature in the U.S., currently sitting pretty at number 40.

Nationwide vs. State Trends

Georgia parents are definitely adding weight to the popularity of certain baby names across the country. Only one lone girl name in the U.S. top 10 doesn’t make the top 25 in Georgia – otherwise, every baby name for boys and girls that are in the country’s top 10 have also taken over in Georgia.

All the boy names in the nationwide top 10 appear on the Georgia top 25:

William (GA-1, USA-5)
Joshua (GA-3, USA-6)
Jayden (GA-5, USA-8)
Jacob (GA-6, USA-1)
Michael (GA-7, USA-3)
Ethan (GA-9, USA-2)
Noah (GA-10, USA-9)
Alexander (GA-11, USA-4)
Daniel (GA-14, USA-7)
Anthony (GA-21, USA-10)

The most popular girl names in Georgia almost mirror the top 10 nationwide rankings. Only Sophia falls just outside of the Georgia top 10, at number 11.

Madison (GA-1, USA-7)
Isabella (GA-2, USA-1)
Emma (GA-3, USA-2)
Olivia (GA-4, USA-3)
Ava (GA-5, USA-5)
Abigail (GA-6, USA-8)
Emily (GA-7, USA-6)
Chloe (GA-8, USA-9)
Sophia (GA-11, USA-4)

The only girl name that’s in the nationwide top 10 but not in the California top 25 is Mia (though it almost made the cut, coming in at 28).

Baby Name Predictions

The popularity of baby names may seem to change on a whim, but popular culture has a lot to do with what’s hot and what’s not. Take, for instance, the name Emma – the moniker Rachel from Friends gave her baby in 2002. The name had been steadily growing in popularity since the early 1990s, but that one TV moment created a big boost, launching Emma from 13 to the number 4 spot. She hasn’t left the top 10. The same phenomenon happened in Georgia – with Emma going from 16 in 2001, to 9 in 2002, and she’s stayed strong at the 2 or 3 spot since.

As the cult status of Grey’s Anatomy grew, so did the strength of the name Addison in Georgia. She went from 31 in 2006 to breaking the top 10 the following year. And, of course, the Twilight influence is obvious with the ever-high-ranking Isabella and Jacob. Expect to see them staying at the top for at least the next few years.
