So much can happen in a year, and 2008 was no exception. Most events and turning points have names attached to them. Collected below are some of the most popular, unusual and trendy baby names that made headlines in 2008.

Celebrity baby names

From the moment a celebrity announces their pregnancy – or the Hollywood gossip hounds speculate about an impending birth – “bump watch” officially begins. Many big names proudly welcomed sons and daughters in 2008 and, while it’s not unusual when a child’s exotic moniker is revealed, it is pleasantly surprising to hear a traditional baby name or two. Political baby names

Politics defined 2008 for the nation and also gathered together a caucus of unique names, from President-Elect Barack Obama to his daughters Malia and Sasha (a nickname for Natasha).

Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s children made headlines themselves for a variety of reasons in 2008, and their original names were all part of the equation: sons Track and Trig Paxson Van, and daughters Bristol, Willow and Piper. Continuing the tradition of solid one-syllable names, daughter Bristol gave birth to son Tripp Easton Mitchell in December.

The children of Vice President-Elect Joseph Biden are Joseph, Robert Hunter, Naomi Christina and Ashley Blazer. Presidential candidate John McCain’s seven children are Douglas, Andrew, Sidney, Meghan, Jack, Jimmy and Bridget. Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney (first name, Willard) has an unforgettable name himself and his five sons’ names range from uncommon to traditional: Tagg, Matt, Josh, Ben and Craig.

Most popular baby names of the year

The popularity of certain baby names haven’t dwindled over the past few years. For girls, Addison, Ava, Emma, Hailey, Isabella, Lily, Madeline, Madison, Olivia and Sophia still top the charts. And plenty of bouncing baby boys were crowned Aiden, Caden, Ethan, Jack, Jackson, Jacob, Jayden, Logan, Matthew and Noah.

A popular trend that has been putting down roots over the past few years really found its footing in 2008 – naming baby after a place. From London to Boston, Paris to Ireland, Dresden to Cairo, if there’s a memorable spot you’d like a constant reminder of, consider if that name is right for your child. Hot on the heels of place names were trends like university names (Xavier, Stanford and Cornell) and old-school, preppy monikers (Archibald, Bennett, Carrington and Jamison).

Though it may seem like weird and wacky names are taking over (Ariance, Blessing, Bryten, Maybalee and Trucker, just to name a few), traditional, Biblical names still rank high: Abigail, Benjamin, Caleb, Daniel, Elijah, Hannah, Joshua, Michael and Zachary.

Choosing a name that is closely associated with a specific year can give even more meaning to your child’s birth. Will one of the above names make their way to your baby’s birth certificate in 2009, will you wait to see what’s hot and what’s not or will you create your own trend?

No good.

I hate the way that people will copy what celebrity's name their children it's like..Wow, can't you be more original then that? I mean, I'm not saying that all people that give their kids the same names are copiers, but, the people that do it for that reason, just wow.
