I can't stand the name Mia. I always want to laugh at it when I hear it as a first name! It means "my"! The only time they use Mia as a name in Italy is as a nick name for Grandma! - Jenna

I have a 2 year old daughter named Mia. It's a beautiful name. We also felt that it's cute for a little girl yet it sounds strong as she becomes a woman. Oh, and for the comment above, she is rebellious.... and sweet, caring, smart, beautiful, funny and an absolute joy to be around! - Jessaca

Ha, how brilliant is this? I have a character named Mia, and her mother is Italian. I had absolutely no idea the name was Italian until just this moment. And the meaning... "Rebellion" XD Perfect. *claps* - Lizzie

Mia and Italy usage and popularity

The name Mia is not very used in Italy. I was born and raised there and only met one Mia (her nickname). Her real name was Melissa. Anyway, Mia is not really a name in Italy. It is a word for mine if you are referring to something fem. When I came here to Florida I realized they use Mia as a name here. I think it's nice. The only Mia I did meet here was also not the person's real name. Her real name was Maria. Too funny that the only Mias I did meet were really not named Mia. Thought I would share. - Jessica
