It was a strong, old Irish name that appealed to us because we are both Irish. It didn't make much mention in baby name books back then so it was unique. I agree that it has become too popular. I still have no regretts because he is the only Aidan I know his age. I don't think it is "irrating or harsh". Certainly not "common or overused" as mentioned above by Jayne.
