The sound is good and the history is there. But this is a stupid spelling. Go with DEREK.

Derrick is an excellent variant of Derek, and it's spelling sets it apart from a very common name, which a lot of younger males already have.
I wouldn't recommend going with DEREK unless your naming him after your father.
