Actually, Reese Witherspoon's full name is Laura Jean Reese Witherspoon. The Reese part of her name came from her grandfather.

What's in a name?
written by Reese, December 26, 2007
or ... Would a Rose, by any other name be just as sweet?

Thanks to BKI06 and Laura. My name is Reese and, last time I checked, I was NOT a male!

As far as Ms. Witherspoon's name being her grandfather's (If my name were Laura Jean Reese Witherspoon, I might be tempted to hide the first couple of names myself!) ... many first names originated as family surnames, particularly with female offspring when there was no male heir to carry on the family name. I have an aunt whose first name is Minor - my grandfather's name. (Yes, she goes by her middle name) She was the firstborn child in her family and, to ensure that the name continued, should my grandparents have no more surviving children, (This was at a time when the nation was still reeling from the devastation of small pox, scarlett fever, and flu epidemics that wiped out large numbers of population and stillbirths and miscarriages were commonplace.)

Names have also been known to change gender association through the ages. How many people know that Shirley was once considered a male name? And Lesley is still to a certain degree interchangeable. Francis/Frances is non-gender specific as are many others.

The biggest problem with name attributes seems to be what others associate with a particular name.

My wife and I named our Daughter Reese in light of a certain actress and for its Welsh meaning of Ardent, Fiery. With so many names being made up, Reese will be a name that is unusual and standout in the crowd.

Hey Kennedy Reese's mom- I have a Reese Kennedy. I must congratulate you on your stellar naming skills. She is the "younger" (by a minute) sister of Elizabeth Quin, who goes by her "boy"'s name as well..
