My name is Tristan also, and i am a female. it always gets shortened to trish or tris which is ok. my husband loves the name i am not too fond of it for a female though. but it is different and you do not hear of it often which is good. =)

does no one realize that the spanish word for "sad" is "triste"? the name tristan also means "sad", which i think is the only downside to the name. Tristan was a Knight of the Round table as well as the hero of the fabulous tale of Tristan and Isolde, although they may also possibly be the same person...
Love it

I have a son named Tristan James. Hes a wonderful boy. And the movie Tristan & Isolde is lovely. Thats where I got his name. I was pregnant when I saw it, and both my husband and I loved it. It stuck. So now were expecting twins. Twin boys. Landon and Heath. Three boys will be a handful, but Im exited. Take care everyone.=]
Trystan

I just wanted to comment that I loved this name since I first heard it. But the more that I said it, the more girly it sounded to me...so, I named my little girl Trystan (and added the y to differientiate from the normal male spelling). Plus it makes her name more unique, as my name, Aubrey used to also be a male name.
very strong name

I chose this name for my son after I had read one of the sequels of Merlin's Daughters. It is a love story of course. I like how the name just rolls of your tongue. I think the name is also very sexy. I hope when my son grows up he ends up appreciating it. He is only six right now. I have always liked unique names. You normally don't hear this name. I like uniques names. I have a daughter named Darcie, a son names Tristan, and a baby girl names Natalie Jade. I think they are all beautiful!!!

My son is Tristan Kiley, which has been hard since we live in Texas and everyone cursed me saying, "That's a girl's name" I thought it funny though that without knowing it, I gave my children then same name in meaning: Tristan and Yvette are both archers. Smile people, and go with your gut not such absolute specifics in meaning!

I think anyone who would saddle their son with a name like Tristan is a very selfish person. Kind of like a boy named "Sue"

I do love the name, however after finding out the true meaning "SAD" i opted against it. spanish translation = triste = sad. Romanian translation = trist = sad...

My name is Tristan and i'm a female. When i was younger I hated having a name that everyone said was a 'boys' name, but as i grew older i came to appreciate how unique it is for a girl to be named Tristan. It makes my name stand out and i really love it! So ladies named Tristan; don't worry. Its not only a boys name, its a strong womans name!! :D

My name is also Tristan, i've always loved it i find it quite unique and due to this people tend to remember it, my parents were a fan of the opera and also All Creatures Great and Small - Subsequently i've turned out very much like the Tristan character in the James Herriot novels!

Meaning: Who Cares
written by Aislin, March 15, 2008
Just because your name carries a meaning doesn't mean you're going to "curse" your child if you choose the wrong one. I knew a "Charity" who was selfish, a "Patience" who was always in a hurry, and a "Chastity" who was anything but that. Naming your son/daughter "Tristan" doesn't mean they're destined for sadness just like naming your child "Ashley" doesn't mean she came from the ash tree meadow, and "Ryan" isn't actually a little king. Just find a name you like, scream it a couple times because I guarantee you'll hate half the names if you have to yell them from the front porch, and don't let the meaning bother you.

P.S. just so the ignorant people know, I don't care if "triste" means "sad" in Spanish...Tristan is not a Spanish name, it's a celtic name. Not everything is Spanish you know, unlike Jorge, Juan, and Pedro. Besides, Tristan also means "riot"...there are always several name meanings depending on where you look it up.
