This is my name - as a child, I didn't like it much because many people pronounced it incorrectly ( I pronounce the G as a J - which most people pronounce as a G), but as I grew older, I love my name - there is so much meaning behind it - (1) my father's name is Gerald, (2) my parents found it in the bible as one of Jesus' disciples, (3) it is a German city, (4) I was told in latin it means "Mother Earth". So for those of you that want to name their children this name - know that there is history behind it and that there are several of us with this name - I, personally, have met several with either the same pronunciation, but spelled differently or spelled the same and pronounced differently. This name can be used both male or female - I have seen both.
