Bread popularized a song. Listen closely to the lyrics and realize that the song is about a girl named aubrey, the equivalent of a boy named Sue. So stop naming your girls aubrey. It means KING of the Elves. And it was more common in Great Britain in the 1800s, as in Aubrey Beardsley, the artist and others. It also was a family name, a last name.
But bless all the little girls burdened with the name since the Bread song went on the radio in the 1970s. It is a pretty song about a girl with a boy's name. Listen to the first few lines and that is clear even in the song about a special girl with a boy's name.

As a mom to an AIDEN (another very strong, Irish BOY name) it's hard to see it now being used for a girl. It just doesn't make sense
