semitic languages
written by linguistic student, December 24, 2007
Um yeah? the reason why there is so much confusion here is that Hebrew and Arabic are both Semitic languages and therefore have many similarities in meaning and pronunciation. The same is true for Aramaic. They are all from the same family. The Hebrew verb that this name seems to be derived from is extremely common, in its simplest for it means ?to go up?. Its sound and basic structure is common in many Semitic languages and thus will show up in a number of variations (Which has led to this debate).

Origin does matter
written by TLC, February 25, 2008
the name is from the old book which gave rise to Judism and Islamic religion. However, Judism came about in the 10th-7th century BCE and Islamic religion came about in 570AD (CE) with the birth of Muhammad. So it stands to say that the name had a hebrew origin even if the muslims use it too..

written by Aleah, May 02, 2008
There was a Hawaiian princess named alia. The name in Hawaiian means great joy. I once met a Hawaiian boy with the name Alia, so I guess it can be unisex there. Anyway, my name is Aleah and I love it. I always have. And it has only been the last few years that I have heard of anyone else having it.

I love that name. Im pregnant of a girl and I really have it in mind. I dont really care about its origin but as long as it has a positive meaning Im cool with it. Besides I love the late singer Aaliyah, she was talented and beautiful. I'm sure my daughter will look much like her.
