GORGEOUS NAME!
written by Ariel Aileen, March 20, 2008
I am a female, and I am Ariel. I know one other person named Ariel. She is a teenage ballet dancer. This is a beautiful name, and yes, I did know boys named Ariel. Such a pretty name........ it was such a hit in 1977. Lots of people got named Ariel. Nowadays, you don't find many people named Ariel. Its newness is wearing off. The newest girl name is now Nevaeh, which is Heaven spelled backwards. But, if it is Heaven backwards, doesn't that mean that that person is...... hell??????? But I'm serious!

This is not a name for a girl.
It's a BOYS name!
written by xxo, August 02, 2008
Ariel has *always* been a boys name. Unfortunately, The Little Mermaid has screwed that up.

Ariel Sharon, ex Prime Minister of Israel? The man was born in 1928 and this MALE name has been around a lot longer than that.

Also, it's pronounced AH ree el.

Boy's Name all the way!
written by Ana, October 03, 2008
I have a son named Ariel. Unfortunately because of the Little Mermaid, he hates it. He wants to legally change it. For Hispanics, Ariel is only for boys. I have never met a hispanic girl named Ariel and when my son was born in 1993 I did not know the Little Mermaid existed. Had I known, I would not have given him the name because now he is suffering at school. People are very ignorant and don't pronounce it correctly, which is R E L.

My name is Ariel and I think it's ridiculous to associate the name with one gender or another. I think part of its beauty is that it can be for either sex. Also, there is not a single correct pronunciation. Granted, I get annoyed when people call me R E L when I consider myself an AIR-E-L. I don't think "The Little Mermaid" made it a female's name -- I was born before the Little Mermaid and I am a female. I was named after The Tempest, and my interpretation of the sprite is that it does not have a gender. I have met equal amounts of female and male Ariel's. Even though I have struggled with my name and have at times wished to change it, I have come to think it is a beautiful name with a wealth of meaning.

Ana: What a shame about your son! Kids are mindlessly cruel... have you tried using just Ari? In spanish the name is beautiful for a boy, it just rolls of the tongue. The pronunciation in english does lean toward the feminine side and unfortunatley as I said kids are merciless. My name is Kendall and I hated my name so much in school my mohter let me tell everyone my name was Katie. When you are young you long for acceptance, now that I am older I cherish that my name is uncommon. It took me a while to get to this place though and kids didn't help at all!
