It's one of those male names that has been transposed to female. Take the more recent examples Taylor/Tyler, Allison, Madison. My grandmother, an aunt and a cousin (all from my dad's side) were named Marion Elizabeth. Truly though, I believe that it is a bigender name, but, like the name Robin, is pretty much only used as a fem. name today.
I think it's original form is Miriam, but I can see how it can also come from Mary (or maybe they all stem from the same word/name).

i agree with u completely sarah elizabeth, it is bigender and i am female and named marion, but tere are also sevral famous football players with the name marion. and my father is named robin, but my husband refuses to believe it is a masculine name. side of the family.

This can be male. My brothers first name is Marion and middle is Kelly, we call him Kelly, and he was teased most of his childhood but he is now proud of his name. He was named after his grandfathers one was named Kelly and one was named Marion
