I will find out if I'm having a boy in 2 weeks, his name will be Declan Thomas if it's a boy! I'm surprised at the negative reaction I have had when people asked if I had a name picked out. I love it and didn't expect such strong responses.

Fine how it is

I adore the name Declan. Although being unique seems to be the 'new thing' - the name is fine as is. Using different spellings takes away from the name, and in fact, makes it an entirely different name. That said... to each his/her own.

My Declan
written by Laurie, July 01, 2008
My Declan is eight years old and I still love his name. I hate when we are at the hospital and they read his name Dee-klan...that drives me nuts. I thought this was sooo original and told my son he would probably never meet another Declan...LITERALLY 30 minutes later I heard a mom at Declan's indoor soccer game call out "Declan" to a 2 year old. I had to call my son over and laugh telling him I lied and that boy's name was Declan as well. I have also since heard the name Declan at the McDonald's play place, he was 5 years old. Although I've ran into a few in my city, it's still a great name and have no regrets!!

My late husband and I discovered the name Declan in an Irish baby name book in 1989. It was a very unusual name at that time and our son just graduated from high school. He really likes having an uncommon name - although whenever we meet anyone from Ireland, they tell us it's very common over there. People always ask me where we got the name and we have gotten many, many positive comments. Friends of ours toured Ireland and there is a tower of St. Declan still standing in County Waterford. It's several hundred years old. We love this name!!

Yes, we spelled it Deklan! As if Declan wasn't different enough we spelled it with a "k". Either way it is a great name! We have met a few other Deklan's, but not many. Very strong boy name. I still love it almost 8 years later!

my son is 24 now and back in '84 it was unheard of here, apart from elvis costello i think. i think its a brill name. it was declan or finbar which i also like. declan gets dec from his friends and i am sure finbar would be shortened to fin which i quite like as well
