The name is, as you say, of Irish (or more correctly Gaelic) origin. Gaelic was also the language of the Isle of Man, and much, but not all, of Scotland.
The Gaelic spelling of Sheila is Síle. This is a combination of two words.
The first 'Sí' means the fairies. The second 'le' has a number of possible meanings: 'with', 'of', 'from'. For example 'duinne le Dia' means a man of God. So, Síle means of, or from, the fairies. In short,a fairychild.
