I think this is a beautiful, old soul name. You do not meet many Sheila's anymore. There are many variations of the spelling,as my name is spelled Sheelah;my aunt is Sheila and my grandmother was Sheelagh.Advice for those who encounter a Sheila with a different spelling:don't comment on it unless you have something nice to say.And don't tell them that's not the Irish spelling,as obviously it is one if my grandmother was born and raised in Ireland.
Incorrect meaning of the name Sheila
written by brendan mcsweeney, August 22, 2010
The meaning you give to the name Sheila is the commonly reproduced one, but it is correct!

The name is, as you say, of Irish (or more correctly Gaelic) origin. Gaelic was also the language of the Isle of Man, and much, but not all, of Scotland.

The Gaelic spelling of Sheila is Síle. This is a combination of two words.
The first 'Sí' means the fairies. The second 'le' has a number of possible meanings: 'with', 'of', 'from'. For example 'duinne le Dia' means a man of God. So, Síle means of, or from, the fairies. In short,a fairychild.

Best wishes,

Professor Dr. Brendan McSweeney
