This name has *no* association with Sarah or "princess" or Hebrew or any other language other than Gaelic. These falsehoods have been perpetuated in baby name books and misguided book authors which have led to this popular misunderstanding.
Sorcha MacAonghais is right. It is an Irish word meaning 'bright/clear' and is the opposite to another Irish word "dorcha" which means dark. This is easily found in any Irish language dictionary.
In Irish, the name is pronounced in variations owing to dialect. Some would pronounce it as 'sorka' (hard k) 'surraka' or with a soft k as in 'loch'. The Irish language does not allow for a silent 'c' when c and h are put together. An Irish speaker would know this.
Of those with no Irish or outside Ireland, it can be pronounced as 'sorsha' 'sorkeh' or 'sorha'. Juliet Marillier used this name in her popular books and even she has a huge problem with her pronunciation/meanings - largely due to the fact that she does not know nor cannot speak the Irish language.
As I've had this name for 39 years, I've come across the gamut of pronunciations. I, myself, prefer the French 'sh' ('sorsha') and will only accept my name as gaeilge from those with the Irish language on their tongue.
Please. If you do not bear the name, please don't assume it has meaning when you've no research to back it. Thanks.
