Cheyenne simply is a First Nations tribe that lives mostly in Oklahoma and Montana. Anyone who is a First Nations person would NEVER name their child the name of their tribe. It's disrespectful and not to mention it doesn't make sense. If you go to the Cheyenne Rez in Oklahoma or in Montana, you will not find anyone named that. And anyone who plans on naming their child a "Native American" name needs to do their homework and find out if it's really a "Indian" name after all. There are so many baby name sites that have lists of "Native Indian" names and 99% are from romance novels and from old westerns. I would hate for your child to grow up only to find out that their name, not only means nothing, but is made up by Hollywood or some author. Naming a human being is very special. Even though I'm sure most of you are going to say that you are descended from a "Cherokee princess" or that your great-great whatever was a "full Indian" or something along those lines, you should pick something that reflects YOUR heritage not someone elses. If you don't know, then do a genealogy tree on one of the various websites out there so you can find out and give you child a family name or a name with origins where you family came from. Be proud of who you are and pass THAT to your child. That is way more important that picking a name that's cool or different.

I named my daughter my version which is Shyanne, and I've heard of so many kids named after cities and countries like Dallas, Austin, and Paris. I don't think that naming your child has to mean anything as long as you choose it and like it. I named my daughter after a song "Beaches of Cheyenne".
Cheyenne

I am pregnant with our second child and I had considered Cheyenne for our first daughter but went with something else. So it's being talked about again for this little one. I think it's a beautiful name. I have a lot of respect for American Indians and while they may not choose to name their children, "Cheyenne" I don't see how it's disrespectful for others to do so. If I followed that logic then I couldn't pick a name that had an Irish origin or a Dutch origin, etc... I am not into "family names" for some that's the way to go but definitely not for everyone!
coming from a cheyenne...please think twice
written by cheyzuh, February 20, 2008
soo...my name is Cheyenne. i get MANY MANY comments on how beautiful my name is. i love that part of it. so it's great and all...BUT..not many people know how to spell it "the right way", let alone SAY it the right way. so if you name your child Cheyenne be prepared to spell it out a million times because people will ask. and it definitely gets annoying. also, there's really no shortening it. if people call her chey (pronounced shy) and she's not shy..its not a fitting nickname. shiney works, but only when she's little. people have actually started calling me Wyoming. and writing out the full thing is a hassle so please, give her a short middle name. i have two middle names, one of which is Alexandrea and writing out my entire on all of my legal documents..ugh. i hate it. my full name actually takes up two lines on my driver's license and my signature has to be way scrunched to be able to fit on papers. so...please think twice. Cheyenne is a beautiful name, however, coming from a Cheyenne...it's not all it's cracked up to be.

And no, Cheyenne does NOT mean "unitelligible speakers". It doesnt really have a meaning...Well anyways, Cheyenne is a very rare name. I don't think it's becoming incredibly common. I've only known 1 other person in my life named cheyenne. I was very young at that time though. Anyways, and it's pronounced "Shy-Ann" not "Shey-en". Sorry, but that pronunciation is annoying. Although, you could have it pronounced like that, if you would like. It's more unique.

Baby Name Cheyenne
written by Donita, February 23, 2008
32 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child, I decided while looking at a road atlas that I loved the name Cheyenne, and if I had a girl that is what I would name her. But my fear was that it would be mis pronounced, with the emphasis being on the "Ch" sound, because it was so unusual, and so I changed the spelling to "Sh" the more apparent "Sh" sound. Well I did have a girl and named her Shianna. With a long "i" sound. Unfortunately this spelling was not well interpreted and her whole life she has had to correct people who say "She anna". So in hind sight, I wished I would have kept it the original spelling and it would have been Cheyenna. But my daughter has always loved her unique name, that was very unusual 32 years ago.
I love it!

I love this name because it is so unique.
I also like that it goes with a lot of middle names.
And, it ends in an anne sound, so it'll fit with lots of different last names too!

I pronounce her name shy-ann but spell it Cheyennne. I love it because I never met another one at least around here. I think it's a beautiful name. People often ask me how to spell it or how to say it. I didn't realize it was so complicated. But I love it anyway.
Cheyenne

My nephew's name is Chayton, which is American Indian. It is pronounced Shey-en just like Cheyenne is, only my sister didn't know that at the time so we call him the way the name is phonetically spelt (Chay-ton). Apparently it means peacful warrior or something similar..I can't actually remember. It isn't common at all. Infact, we know no one else who's name is Chayton.
Cheyann
written by CheyChey, July 24, 2008
My name's Cheyann. I never used to like it, mostly because people are always misspelling it, so I have to tell them how to spell it. I usually have to spell it multiple times for the same person, and they still spell it wrong, so that really irritates me. I used to really hated it especially when I was in elementary school, now I love it,(I could count all the people I've met with the name on one hand) and I wouldn't change it. Although I have decided that when I have kids I will not be giving them a name that means unintelligible speaker, or anything like that.

I have always loved the name cheyenne, but wanted to spell it different from every other way I have seen it spelled. So when my little girl was born 16 months ago I named her Alexis Shyann. Everyone that has seen the spelling has loved the way I came up with it. And coming from someone that was born and lived my whole life in Oklahoma (up until the last 18 months), and is part of the cheyenne tribe I don't agree with someone that thinks no one from the tribe would ever name their child after the tribe.
i love it
written by Shyann, August 17, 2008
My names Shyann. Pronounced the same way, just spelled differently. When i was little i didn't like my name because people always asked how my parents came up with the spelling or they would give me compliments on it and it would embarrass me. Now that I'm older, i love it. i get so many compliments on the name and the spelling. I wouldn't change my name if given the chance.
origin of Cheyenne
written by Cheyenne, August 17, 2008
My name is Cheyenne Mae (i use Chey as my nickname also). My mom came up with this name for me by combing her name Sharon, with her mom's name Dianne (the sh from
Sharon and ann from Dianne). My dad who has always felt a spiritual connection to the region outside of Cheyenne, Wyoming decided on the spelling (ironically he was a over the road truck driver and was in the City of Cheyenne the day i was born). Part of the reason my mom loved this name is because it was so unconventional. I on the other hand always hated it growing up because it was so different, and i constantly had to spell it for people and you wouldn't believe some of the mispronunciations people come up with for it. in school i would often get called by my last name because new teachers wouldn't even attempt to pronounce it. I am often told how pretty my name is and its starting to grow on me now that it is becoming more popular, but i just wanted to let parents know that are thinking about giving this name to their child what the actual origin is (there are several different meanings for the name, or so i always find different ones on these websites). When the French settlers and fur trappers first encountered the Native Americans they called them chien (pronounce like shen)which is French for dog the English settlers heard this and mangled the word into Cheyenne. Just a little food for thought.
