KateW Im often baffled by some of the things I overhear the kids at work say, being before/after school care the mix of ages means that it gets even more jumbled. Often I find myself having to speak with parents along the lines of "Today I overheard your child and a few friends _____"

Some of my 'favourites' if you will, come from the younger kids, usually when theyre in a circle giggling and I walk by and overhear a bit, before they stop, stare at me and get embaressed.

"And the baby grows inside the boobies, and thats why boobs are so huge"
"Daddies have peepee milk and mummies have boobie milk and they mix them together"
Were two that i'll never forget, both by the same group of 6yr olds would you believe, their parents have since spoekn to all of them.

From about 8 onwards I find that they start becoming more aware about sex, so the sex jokes come up often ("Go rent a girlfriend and get a room" was one that I found quite witty, the mere fact that she told this boy to rent a girlfriend, that said, I had to speak to her about keeping said opinions to herself) Oh and that joke was made by an 8yr old.
Keyra Thanks for this insightful information into this.
AshleyR Wow 9 years old?! Why do kids know about things this young? I'm 23 years old and I didn't know what sex was until the 8th grade. This is so scary that our society has gone to this. Wow, that totally baffles me, 9 years old. Did he/she come to you and ask you?
Pj she is not to young in school here they teach it in 5th grade. i talked to my son about it when he was seven. There are age appropriate ways to do it. go to your library and go to the children section. They will have something suitable to understand what she needs to know at her age.It is best to have the start of it come from the parent. there is way to much going on in the world these days to let them find out in ways you dont want them to no matter how much you think you know them.. educate her appropriatly.
namefanatic I think maybe you should wait a little while...Pretty soon she'll learn it in school but if you really think it's a good idea to teach her get her a book on it and if she doesn't want it just wait and see until she learns it in school.
Lalina900 I learned about sex when I was 9 years old from my friends. I didn't actually talk to my mom about it until I was about 11. It felt very awkward for me, since she didn't really know that I knew about it. Talk to her about it while she is still young, and make sure she doesn't get weirded out by it - you could break a bond you two have! Here's how I would start: Like all the cheesy movies, say "When a mommy and a daddy love each other very much . . ." MAKE SURE YOU SAY A MOM/DAD, not just girl/boy or woman/man!! But try to explain it in a simple way that's not too gross . . .

Hope this helped!!
