Hi,

i'm about to become a father at the end of the year. Like everyone expecting a baby, me and my wife are looking for some nice babynames. We do have a few names we like for a girl but one week ago, we heard about a babygirl called LEWIS. Our first reaction was: 'that's a boy's name', but on second thought, we found this a very original name for a girl.

But we don't have English as our mothertongue (as you probably have guessed), so it's difficult for us to know if this name can be used for girls. Here in Belgium, there aren't many Lewises, so that's why I want to ask you, Englishspeaking babylovers, to tell me if the name Lewis can be used for a girl.
Can it be used for boys and girls like names as 'Andy' or 'Charlie' or is it an exclusive male name like 'Roger' or 'William'?

I just don't want my kid to be given strange looks every time she goes abroad and tells her name.

So far I only know Lewis as a boys name. However, I think it would be an adorable girls name Right now there is a trend in the US to give children unique names, including masculine names for little girls. So if she were to be hanging out with people her age while traveling abroad in the future, I don't think anyone would think twice about it. My vote is to go for it!

I personally have never met a girl named Lewis, but I've also never met a boy close to my age (I'm 21) named Lewis either. If you love the name, I say go for it!

How about Lois (loh-is) or Louise (lu-ees)?

I don't like Lewis on a girl, I think it just plane werid, especially as I know quite a few Lewis's my age and younger. I like Emily's of Lois, it's close but not boyish
