Teachers By StacyG 2 Years, 3 Months Ago From a mom's point of view what do you think about teachers not pronouncing your child's name right or refusing to call the child by a middle or Nick name?
Last Edit: 2009/10/30 16:44 By StacyG.
Reason: misspelling

Re:Teachers By SHeff 2 Years, 3 Months Ago I'm not a mother and was a Preschool teacher. But in both point of views I think they should call the child what the parents requested or find out how to pronounce the name correctly. In different instances it could cause the child to be teased if the name isn't pronounced right.

By SLM 2 Years, 3 Months Ago When you name your child an unusual hard to pronounce name sometimes the teacher says the name the best she can. I don't think a teacher would call your child something else on purpose. This year I have a Ryan (boy) and a Ryanne (girl) in my class. Both are pronounced Ryan, but I found they did not know who I was talking to, so I told the little girl I knew her name was Ryan but I would call her Ry-ann so she would know when I was speaking to her and the boy "Ryan". This has helped them know which one I was talking to.
If your child goes by a middle name. . . every year at the beginning of the year the list we get from the office has the name written on the both certificate so the first day your child will be called their "given" name until we find out they use their middle name. Then they will be called their middle name. That is why I tell people it is best to have your child's first name be the name you are going to call him/her, because that is what they will hear called out in class the first day of school, at first doctor appointments, etc.

Re:Teachers By Alisamber 2 Years, 3 Months Ago Yes, people should call you what you or your parents introduce you as. To do otherwise is ridiculous. You can name your child whatever you want, I'm all for parental rights. But it's so important as an expectant parent to think about how other people will view and say the name so you're not making it hard on them, your child, or you.

By leftAndGone 2 Years, 3 Months Ago I was a victim of getting teased due to CONSTANT mis-pronunciation of name by teachers. But my case was very unusual comparing to what it is like in U.S. Most of my teachers in my home town were carrying improper accents.
Anyways, I think names should be called properly based on parents' preferences, after all, they name their children the way they intend. But if you happen to give your child a very unusual name, then don't expect teachers to get it right the first times, and don't get offended either, because not everyone can guess it right easily. Just let the teachers know exactly how you want your child to be called. Most teachers do not intend to cause embarrassments for you and your children.
