So, so stuck!!
By Ali R 2 Years, 2 Months Ago
Hi

I wonder if you could be the ones to help me! I need to find a Scottish name for my baby boy - we really want it to be Scottish! However, we're finding it really tricky. We love Fergus but our surname ends in an F so we're worried about this. I spend all day switching between thinking this would work OK, and thinking we will have to find something else. Except there doesn't seem to be anything else out there that we like. We want a name with 2 syllables, that's really uncommon. If anyone could come up with something I'd be really grateful!

Well.. How about Iain? (pronouced Ian) It means Gift from God and its scottish. Its a wonderful name, and its meaning is really nice.

That's so nice, but unfortunately it's my uncle's name and I don't really want to use his name! Great idea though, at least it's different! Any more where that came from?

I really like Dashiell and have done for quite some time. But I'm a little confused about it - some sources say it's French - is it French or Scottish? Wish I knew! I do like the unusual sound of it and the Dashiell Hammett literary connection. Is it pronounced
DASH-uhl - 2 syllables - or 'Dash - EE -uhl' - 3 syllables? Is it too far 'out there'?

Although I have never met one, I think Dash-Uhl is the right one and I have only ever heard of it being scottish. I think it is such a cool name, I love it and I wouldn't worry about it being too out there, but I guess it depends on where you live.
