I would use the nickname Leon or Leo or pair it with a J middle name (eg James) and use the nickname LJ. What are your opinions on it? You could think of an Italian name - not necessarily a 'J' - for a 2nd name for Leonardo but it will have to be short-ish. Can't think of any example at the moment. I like using initials for nicknames. My daughter is JD and if I have a boy he will be AJ or DJ. Leonardo would be good for when they are older and Leo or Leon would be good for when they are young.
