By Flutura 3 Months, 4 Weeks Ago I promise this isn't meant to sound condescending or anything, but.. simply meant to teach. I've spent years and years studying etymology and origin and trying to understand where names get their meanings and such, so I promise you, I know more about the most random name facts than you can possibly imagine.. as sad as that is lol Language and linguistics have EVERYTHING to do with names
First, I have to say that just because a name is used on both genders, that doesn't mean it's unisex. If you met a girl named Jason, is Jason suddenly unisex? If you met a boy named Elizabeth, is it unisex? No. It means the parents gave their boy a girl's name and vice versa. When a boy name "goes over" to the girls, it does not necessarily make it unisex.. it means the girls are getting the names of boys. Like Ryan and Aubrey, for example.. both of which have "king" in their meanings due to origin and such. If there's a little girl named Ryan, the meaning is still "little king" and Aubrey is still "Elvin king" ..it doesn't change to queen. So pleaseee, don't automatically assume that, just because other people decided Elizabeth is now a boy name and Jason is a girl that that means they're unisex.. because it just means that the parent picked what they liked and couldn't care less about whether or not it was on the correct gender :/ Meanings comes from origins and etymology, and in many cases, that can't be transferred. Some names that ARE unisex, however, some people refuse to use on the other gender. For example, my name's Sara, and in Hebrew it means "princess," but in some cultures, Sara's a masculine name and the origin according to their language, since Sara has more than one root, means something TOTALLY unrelated. Find reliable websites -- I'd say 99% of them are inaccurate -- or reliable people and figure out the true meaning/s and origin of the names you love, if it matters to you. If, however, you don't care.. then sure, Avery works. Avery is a traditional surname, which, of course, made it masculine immediately. Most of the time, surnames are for the boys. People started using Avery on the girls more recently, probably for the nickname Ava, but.. that doesn't change the fact that it's a masculine surname. Avery is a form of Alfred Can you get away with it? OF COURSE. Avery's been in the top 1000 names since 1989 for girls. In 1989, it was at number 986. Now, number 48. Nobody would look twice at her, and she'd more than likely have more than one in her class. She'd fit in perfectly, and she'll probably love her name. YOU loving the name is all that really matters.. and if you don't care about the fact that the name may have teasing potential ("ovary" or "aviary" ..but every name has teasing potential one way or another) or that the name is very traditionally male, then by all means, use it.. you need to love her name Think about the fact that you said you know so many girls named Avery, though. Do you care that it's so popular? Will it bother you that she's one of many, instead of having a more unique name? It's your call. More than ANYTHING, love her name.. and if this is what you love, then use it.

QUOTE: know whats funny. I've had more friends name there daughters boyish type names. just recently my neighbor had a baby girl and named her Blayne Mackenzee. i think in some cases its acceptable to have a boy name for a girl, because sometimes you can switch the spelling and make it cute, but when people start naming their little princesses Anthony, David Zach etc, then we would have a problem. I love Avery for a girl, maybe a different spelling and a super feminine middle name would "girl" it up a bit.
